Gentlemen,

Hong-Kong, 21st. June, 1898.

As my solicitors in respect of the charge of accepting a bribe preferred against me I beg to inform you that I have no defence to put forward. If you are able to make any arrangement by which the present charge should be with- drawn provided I accept my instant dismissal and forfeit all claims for pension or otherwise due to me I hereby authorise you to make such terms without further reference to me. I here- by undertake not to bring any action for false imprisonment or to take any steps against the police or others who are acting as witnesses for the prosecution herein.

I authorise you to send a copy of this letter

to the Crown Solicitor on my behalf which is of course to be

handed him on the terms that this letter will not in any way

be used against me in case the Government do not see fit to

accede to the above.
